March Birchbox

I really did not think Birchox could out do themselves, but they have.
Although throw in any nail polish and I am as happy as a clam.
Teen Vogue and Birchbox teamed up to make this months box and the collaboration was fantastic.
Inside my box I found
hair serum
essie nail polish
fresh sugar lip balm
a perfume sample
a hair tie

{word to the wise}
If you have thick hair, like I do, that hair tie will last two seconds

Happy Weekend

After a week of being off
//Dear summer please come soon\\
I made it to Friday and am extremely grateful for two days of rest

here is a recap of how quarter four began
 Planning three grade levels is always a challenge and usually ends up with me going in three directions at the same time
 //oh to only teach one grade level \\
Notice goal four
I found this semi-impossible as I:
1. made my 8th graders read a literature story in silence
2. sent a 7th grader out of my room within four minutes of coming in
3. made a 6th grader cry
Starting every class with a vocabulary routine is lovely
 Busting out some good old Crayola for our interactive notebooks
Read a story by Maya Angelo that covered the theme "challenge"
Had students write a paragraph about a challenge they went through

KONY 2012

I am sure many have seen this video floating around every where, but for those of you who have not it is worth the watch.

{re-wind two days before spring break}
My 8th graders were done learning all they needed for quarter three. I still needed to find something "educational" for them to accomplish in those days and I did not want to start anything new. Since I am not one to throw a party/fun day of any kind in my classroom; I needed to find something for them to do.
// reason #11 why I would never make it as an elemntary teacher\\

I began seeing this Kony video all over my wall on facebook and watched it Wednesday morning; which sparked an idea of what to do with my 8th graders.

I decided to show them the movie
//a tad bit risky\\

Prior to the video they created a KWL chart about Africa
then we discussed WWII and who was the main "villain"
which lead to talking about other "villains" that have been around
Suddam Hussein
Osama Bin Laden
I asked them if there are any other "villains" today
first group of 8th graders said: no
second group of 8th graders said: Kony
Lastly, I asked them if they knew what injustice was and if they could give me an example of injustice.
I briefed them on what would be in the video and screened some of the images.
Afterwards we skimmed the letter from President Obama and they wrote a letter to a person in power. Their letters were powerful and very moving.

A few students who had their Itouches on them downloaded the LRA tracker

I believe this is an important issue and would be silly not to discuss in the classroom with caution. Older students are bound to watch this video; so why not discuss the situation in the classroom. I am not going to ignore what is happenig in the world. My job is to educate and open students up to new ideas. This video allowed me to do so.
 If you are skeptical, like I was, research the charity invisible children

One Day Without Shoes - essie

 Essie is teaming up with TOMS again and giving away a limited edition TOMS inspired nail polish color! To grab your own bottle visit www.facebook.com/TOMS on March 7th for more details!

The day came and went

I some how managed to convince myself that Tuesday, FL writes day, was two days in one. Yes, the morning was Tuesday and the afternoon was Wednesday. Despite my blunder of thinking I went through two days and not one, the Kiddos did amazing on the FL writes.
As I predicted the prompt was persuasive and was not as bad as I was expecting; although it was not the best. Better than writing an essay about riding a camel!
Since all of my students have IEPs they have extended time
//Thank Goodness\\
They spent 45 minutes with me and then were moved to the media center to finish out the test. For the time they were with me they planned and pre-wrote their essays. Watching them do everything they have been taught this year was beyond beautiful! I am so proud of them, they took their time and did everything I told them to do! Now I just have to wait for the results to come in.

On a side note I informed my 7th graders that I now consider them 8th graders. Some were excited about the unexpected promotion while others were not happy at all that I made them my new "writing project"
They are in for a bumpy ride!
