I really did not think Birchox could out do themselves, but they have.
Although throw in any nail polish and I am as happy as a clam.
Teen Vogue and Birchbox teamed up to make this months box and the collaboration was fantastic. Inside my box I found hair serum essie nail polish fresh sugar lip balm a perfume sample a hair tie
{word to the wise} If you have thick hair, like I do, that hair tie will last two seconds
I am sure many have seen this video floating around every where, but for those of you who have not it is worth the watch.
{re-wind two days before spring break}
My 8th graders were done learning all they needed for quarter three. I still needed to find something "educational" for them to accomplish in those days and I did not want to start anything new. Since I am not one to throw a party/fun day of any kind in my classroom; I needed to find something for them to do.
// reason #11 why I would never make it as an elemntary teacher\\
I began seeing this Kony video all over my wall on facebook and watched it Wednesday morning; which sparked an idea of what to do with my 8th graders.
I decided to show them the movie
//a tad bit risky\\
Prior to the video they created a KWL chart about Africa
then we discussed WWII and who was the main "villain"
which lead to talking about other "villains" that have been around
Suddam Hussein
Osama Bin Laden
I asked them if there are any other "villains" today
first group of 8th graders said: no
second group of 8th graders said: Kony Lastly, I asked them if they knew what injustice was and if they could give me an example of injustice.
I briefed them on what would be in the video and screened some of the images.
Afterwards we skimmed the letter from President Obama and they wrote a letter to a person in power. Their letters were powerful and very moving.
A few students who had their Itouches on them downloaded the LRA tracker
I believe this is an important issue and would be silly not to discuss in the classroom with caution. Older students are bound to watch this video; so why not discuss the situation in the classroom. I am not going to ignore what is happenig in the world. My job is to educate and open students up to new ideas. This video allowed me to do so.
If you are skeptical, like I was, research the charity invisible children

I some how managed to convince myself that Tuesday, FL writes day, was two days in one. Yes, the morning was Tuesday and the afternoon was Wednesday. Despite my blunder of thinking I went through two days and not one, the Kiddos did amazing on the FL writes.
As I predicted the prompt was persuasive and was not as bad as I was expecting; although it was not the best. Better than writing an essay about riding a camel!
Since all of my students have IEPs they have extended time
//Thank Goodness\\
They spent 45 minutes with me and then were moved to the media center to finish out the test. For the time they were with me they planned and pre-wrote their essays. Watching them do everything they have been taught this year was beyond beautiful! I am so proud of them, they took their time and did everything I told them to do! Now I just have to wait for the results to come in.
On a side note I informed my 7th graders that I now consider them 8th graders. Some were excited about the unexpected promotion while others were not happy at all that I made them my new "writing project"
I have been debating doing away with Birchbox, but thank goodness I did not!
For when I opened this months birchbox I jumped for joy when I spotted the every so lovely pink sponge!
Some of you may be wondering "why all the excitement over a sponge that you could wash a dish with?"
*that would of course be a sin*
Well the hot pink sponge, beauty blender, is the ultimate make up sponge that guarantees a flawless finish. Now one beauty blender retails for $19.95 and many of you know Birchbox is a $10 subscription...so everything else that came in the box was an extra.
I got some odd tattoo eyeliner...that my sister will be given
Concealer...nice and creamy
spicy chocolate...lasted three minutes
So once again I have been won over by the people of Birchbox
For 8th graders to take the FL writes this Tuesday!
My bet is that the prompt will be persuasive, but I could be wrong. I just hope the prompt is not something ridicules to write an essay on. I am not a fan of tricking students!
My 8th graders and myself have been incredibly busy preparing for this test all year. I feel that they have come a loooong way since August and are ready to take the test.
Just like last year 7th and 6th graders made cards to each 8th grader encouraging them and wishing them good luck this Tuesday. The cards are very thoughtful and contain sentences like this:
"You encouraged me all last year and now it is my turn to encourage you"
"I don't even know why you have to take the test, they should know you are the world's best writer!"
Please pray for all FL 4th, 8th and 10th graders as they write their essays on Tuesday! Pray that they retain all that they have learned and perform to their true potential.
One day without shoes is approaching, April 10th, giving you the opportunity to spread awareness. Spending one day without shoes may seem odd, but there are people that have no other option. So on April 10th ditch your shoes to gain perspective on how others live their daily life...shoeless.
Around the first week back from break a mid my sickness I some how ran out of patience with a particular student. I am typically a very flexible and tolerant person, but when push comes to shove there is no excuse big enough.
This student was out of his seat talking with two girls which of course distracted them from completing their work. I asked the student to return to his seat and of course lingering occurred.
//Here is where push comes to shove takes place\\
Mr. A if you do not return to your seat before I count to three than you are out of here.
1-2-3
Bye Bye Mr. A
Miss I was-was just
No- go away
The student left and while he was in another classroom wrote an apology note and a step-by-step detailed account in what took place in under five minutes.
In his note he depicted that I clearly count to three way to fast to his liking.
Today in class this student decided to take a walk down memory lane as he wrote his acrostic poem
Making teachers
And Ms. Hall to be
Ready for them to
Call my mom today
Below is an ever so lovely picture of the day where I counted to three a tad bit too fast
//Cherry on top\\
it just happened to be Mr. A's birthdays on the 1-2-3 incident
Not be sick any more because you are back to your old self.
This is exactly what one of my 8th graders said this morning. The good news is that my awful cold-sinus-allergy sickness thing is 95% gone. Last time I counted I went through 6 boxes of Kleenex {my Kleenex issue was so bad one day that I had to grab an additional box from a teacher friend} grew a new layer of skin under my nose as well as increased my ab strength with all the blowing and coughing that occurred. Semi-Bonus I now have students blaming me for them getting sick!
On a side note I have learned that I am not generous when it comes to letting students use one of my Kleenexes...especially when they give A minuscule puff in the tissue...not cool at all.
As I was trying to get oxygen through my clogged nose students were mastering the art of poetry.
Rhyme scheme
figurative language
analyzing poems
and all that jazz
They are just now beginning to write their own poems
